* Applying for Citizenship? U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Wants to Be Your "Friend"
New documents uncovered by an EFF Freedom of Information
Act lawsuit reveal two ways the government has been
tracking people online: monitoring social networks to
investigate citizenship petitions and using a "Social
Networking Monitoring Center" to collect and analyze online
public communication during President Obama's inauguration.
A two-part series has more:

EFF Updates
* Holding Nokia Responsible for Surveilling Dissidents in
Iran
EFF has long pointed out that technology companies are
complicit in human rights violations when they knowingly
sell customized human surveillance technologies to
repressive regimes that are then used to target people for
arrest, torture, and disappearance. A new lawsuit filed
against Nokia Siemens by an imprisoned Iranian dissident
brings this issue to the fore.

* Facebook Moves Closer to EFF Bill of Privacy Rights
Facebook has announced three new features that help protect
user privacy and control. But while these are strong
improvements, EFF has some additional recommendations for
the social networking giant.

* Search Engines Protect Privacy with Outbound HTTPS Links
Two search engines are taking big steps toward making HTTPS
use much more routine and ubiquitous -- and it stems in
part from EFF's work on "HTTPS Everywhere."

* EFF Asks Appeals Court to Review Dangerous 'First Sale'
Decision
EFF asked a federal appeals court to review its ruling in
Vernor v. Autodesk, a decision that could undermine the
rights of software buyers and other consumers.

* Judge Allows Trial of CFAA Claim Against Wiseguys
While noting the concerns raised by EFF and others, a
federal judge decided to delay a decision on the thorny
question of whether the government can use the Ticketmaster
website's terms of use to smack ticket resellers with
criminal charges.

A bogus copyright claim temporarily got a political video
blocked on YouTube, showing how important an understanding
of "fair use" is during election season.
